2:00am, just got back home today! recap of the last two days:

Day 3: It was Thursday night, 8pm, the night before Coachella.  The day had started off rocking!  We were doing 4 miles an hour (amazing for us!) and hit 8 miles in less than two hours. [video]

The first two days we knocked out (mostly walked) 46 miles.  37 miles was the plan for the new day.  17 miles later, Johns right ankle had quadrupled in size and my knee was in a whole new world of pain.  We ended up sitting on a boulder waiting for Jerry to pick us up.

Almost all of the run for day 3 was on Route 74.  It cuts through a huge mountain, there’s no sidewalks/paths & tons of cars.  Between jumping back & forth from street to mountain side avoiding cars, we pushed ourselves too hard and were destroyed. [video]

So it was 8pm, we decided to eat our first real meal of the day at Le Basil, try to rest and hopefully get back out there.  Heads bowed in shame and exhausted, it wasn’t looking good.   Then God came in.

Guido + Michiel Frackers just so happened to plop down at the table next to us.  Two brothers from Amsterdam, they two of the most amazing humans I’ve ever met.

Guido + his bud Andy are two weeks from doing an Ironman Marathon, 2 miles of swimming, 110 mile bike ride, then a marathon run to close it out…  He overheard our run talk with the waitress…

“You ran here from Riverside?!?!!??”

We told him the whole story, 100 miles blah blah, how we were both exhausted and injured, but were hoping to get a second wind.

30 minutes later I got a text from Guido.  We were still outside in the parking lot of the restaurant, groaning in agony.

“My buddy Andy and I will run with you guys tonight!”

Fast forward an hour. Guido shows up at our hotel with Andy.  He’d been drinking at a nearby bar.  They come armed with Icy Hots, an array of run gear and a cooler full of beer.  Aristocat was instantly rejuvenated.  [video]

11pm, With Michiel + Jerry in a follow car, lighting up the roads, we ran another 10 miles!  Having two more people completely invigorated us.  It was amazing.  Before 1am, we wrapped up 27 miles on the day!

Run Breakdown:
Day 1, Galleria at Tyler to Beaumont, 32 miles
Day 2, Beaumont to Morongo Casino, 16 miles
Day 3, Morongo Casino to Marriot Shadow Ridge, 27 miles (drove the rest)
Day 4, Marriot Shadow Ridge to Vestal Village, 5 miles (had to be there @ 2pm to DJ)

We pretty much only had 3 days to shoot for 100 miles because we had to be at Vestal Village at 2pm to setup/DJ.  I’m definitely proud of the 80 miles we were able to knock out!

This week we’re going to figure out where to run our last 20 miles, all suggestions are appreciated!  Rest assured it will be crazy.

I just got a $1,000 check donation in the mail from Christina Harbaugh, an amazing family friend who fed us Coca-Cola secretly behind my parents back.  The best!  We are up to 112 donations, $12,710!

2:00am, late Wednesday night.

Aristocat fell asleep two hours ago, we just got to the Morongo Casino in Cabazon California.  This is the end of the 2nd day, 100 Mile DJ Run for charity: water.  We ran, jogged, + mostly walked 46 miles so far.  I’m beyond exhausted, but I really want to throw you guys an update.

Noteables on journey so far:

30 minutes late for press conference at Shiekh Shoes.  We got there first, Dae ended up getting lost and pretty much missed the whole thing haha! The night before I prayed A LOT that it wouldn’t be empty.

We arrive, there are two reporters and a photographer.  It was all good, they were extremely interested in us and spent more than two hours interviewing + shooting.  So grateful to Jeff @ Voice of America + The Press Enterprise.

Meera from Sweet Craze was there + baked us 100 cupcakes!  I LOVE MEERA! I hate cupcakes, but she has made me a huge fan.  Definitely the best in the world.  Thanks so much to Eric for spreading the word to her.

We take off running, first 7–8 miles were really smooth, after that, pain and anguish slowly creeped up on us.  10 miles of incline shortly followed.

During our scout of the run, we failed to notice how there were huge portions of the route lacking sidewalks + walking areas.  We ended up walking on the shoulder of roads trying to avoid rocks + jagged debris.

I’m running in Vibram FiveFingers, thin gloves for your feet.  I can feel almost every pebble on the ground, sharp objects hurt.  Dae’s been trying to get me to wear shoes but I must finish in these!

For some reason we thought it’d be a good idea not to eat anything except small portions of salads and nuts.  That was dumb.  By the end of the night, we we’re completely drained, and the temperature had dropped below 45…

No sidewalks so we’re walking between the railroad and the streets.  Everytime a car got near, I turned on my flashlight so they knew not to kill us.  Feet were really hurting but it was so cold, they were numb.

During the later portion of the evening the 10 minute routine went something like this.

It was so dark, seemed like we were getting nowhere.  36 miles was our goal for the first day.  Freezing and in anguish, the last mile we finished took 45 minutes, we were basically crawling.  Ended up laying down next to a street lamp and called Jerry to pick us up.

Found a Denny’s to grub.  1st day = 30 miles down!

We did 16 miles today!  Extremely sore, we walked the entire thing.  We’ve talked about so many ridiculous things that right now I can’t remember a single one of them.

I’ll upload more photos tomorrow, I’m falling asleep as I type. 

37 miles tomorrow = insanity.

On April 13, Aristocat + I (Sleeper) will attempt to run 100 miles over 4 days, directly to DJ at a special invite event outside Coachella, one of the largest music festivals in the nation.

We’ll be running through scorching deserts and mountain terrain during crazy summer heat. A bus where we rest + eat will meet us at certain check points with live video feed. The DJ sets will also be broadcast live.

Our goal is two-fold: raise $50,000 for Charity Water and show the world the physical potential of the average person. We are the farthest thing from a finely tuned athlete and neither of us has ever ran a marathon.

This run is inspired by the book Born to Run by Christopher McDougall. We’re all born to run!

Why charity: water?
charity: water is a non-profit organization bringing clean, safe drinking water to people in developing nations.

Unsafe water and lack of basic sanitation cause 80% of all sickness and disease, and kill more people every year than all forms of violence, including war. Many people in the developing world, usually women and children, walk more than three hours every day to fetch water that is likely to make them sick. Of the 42,000 deaths that occur every week from unsafe water and a lack of basic sanitation, 90% are children under 5 years old.

4,500 children will die TODAY from water related diseases. This is ridiculous.  Just $20 can give one person in a developing nation clean water for 20 years. $50,000 will save 500 families, 2,500 people.

100% of all donations go directly to water projects, funding sustainable clean water solutions in areas of greatest need. Each donation is “proved” with GPS when projects are complete. You’ll see exactly where your money is saving lives.
